International Year of Plant Health, 2020+

Almost overlooked in a time when the COVID-19 pandemic began to threaten human health and life around the planet was the 2020 International Year of Plant Health (IYPH). Here’s a quick catch-up about this important observance, which has been “extended until 1 July 2021 due to the postponement of some key initiatives caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.”

IYPH is organized by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization with the intent “to raise global awareness on how protecting plant health can help end hunger, reduce poverty, protect the environment, and boost economic development.” As such it relates to efforts to promote the Sustainable Development Goals, and in particular the second of these, Zero Hunger.

IYPH was declared in a UN General Assembly resolution (A/RES/73/252) on 20 December 2018, following a process of consultations beginning with a proposal by Finland in 2015 to the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM) of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC).

IYPH also serves to cap the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity (2011-2020).

The closing ceremony of IYPH will be held in Rome & virtually on 1 July 2021..
