Subject: [Blitz-l] E-mail lists about L10n in Africa

Hi Paa Kwesi, I’m working on a more comprehensive description of the lists. One can say that there are 4 groups of lists/forums:

1) “PanAfrican.Localisation” lists, which are meant for discussion of all aspects of localization in African languages. There are three lists, one each for three working languages (English, French, Portuguese). They have automatic translation. They are the successors to the "PanAfrLoc" list used for the Casablanca workshop. Marrakech workshop participants are invited to them:

a. PAL-en http://lists.panafril10n.org/mailman/listinfo/pal-en
b. PAL-fr http://lists.panafril10n.org/mailman/listinfo/pal-fr
c. PAL-pt http://lists.panafril10n.org/mailman/listinfo/pal-pt
(there is a new page on these at http://www.panafril10n.org/wikidoc/pmwiki.php/PanAfrLoc/PAL-lists )

2) “A12n” (= “Africanisation” in a technical sense) lists + Unicode-Afrique

a. A12n-Collaboration (technical, focusing on characters, fonts, keyboards) - http://lists.kabissa.org/mailman/listinfo/a12n-collaboration
b. A12n-Forum (more newsy than A12n-collab) - http://lists.kabissa.org/mailman/listinfo/a12n-forum
c. A12n-Entraide (like A12n-forum in French, but little traffic) - http://lists.kabissa.org/mailman/listinfo/a12n-entraide
d. Unicode-Afrique (in French, the largest and oldest of all, more than just Unicode) - http://fr.groups.yahoo.com/group/Unicode-Afrique/

3) Country and/or language specific

a. Ten message boards at http://www.quicktopic.com/share?s=QSpo
b. Some other lists such as "Informatique et langues des deux Congo"

4) Specialized lists

a. Blitz-l (Marrakech workshop)
b. PanAfricanL10n (Googlegroup of the working group named in Marrakech)

The hope is that the .PAL lists will become a more active platform for PanAfrican communication about localization.

The A12n lists are older and have significant numbers of subscribers. These are a different kind of resource.

The language specific forums will probably become more numerous. This is a good thing, but we also need to somehow feed useful information from them to the .PAL lists.

All the best.

.Don

Hi Don,
Thanks. Is there somewhere in particular (I have not looked hard) where all the mailing lists are listed and explained? I agree things can get confusing pretty quickly. It will also aid the effort to reduce duplication.

Bonjour Don, Merci.
