A project to map the personal and research locations of people working on endangered languages, by Victoria Cheung

Excerpts from a letter reposted to various lists follow. Basically her object is summed up as: Producing "a mapping that demonstrates visually the differences between where linguists are from, where they work, and where they play." To that end she is seeking responses from linguistic researchers.

I have been researching and making artwork about endangered languages for a couple years now. ... I found it interesting (and alarming!) that there are so many endangered languages that we can see an overall shape of the world- even without political boundaries or geographical borders. ...

This new project is the first time I'm collecting my own data. If you have time, please respond to the questions below. ...

Here are the questions. Please specify the name of ONE city/town and country:

- where were you born?

- where were you raised primarily?

- where do you live currently?

- where do you do fieldwork primarily?

- where did you go on vacation recently?

If you would like to tell me a story about your answer(s) or make a comment, please include it here:

I hope through the responses to produce a mapping that demonstrates visually the differences between where linguists are from, where they work, and where they play. ...

If you know linguists who would be interested in this project, please have them contact me at linguistsreply(at)gmail.com. It would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much for your time,
Victoria
